The Secret To Living A Meaningful Life Is To Follow Your Curiosity

Today I listened to Alicia Keys and John Mayer sing a medley of “If I Ain’t Got You” and “Gravity” together in New York City.
The video is from 2017, but here I was at 11 AM on a Thursday, giving a big middle finger to my work, listening to these creative geniuses serenade me with beautiful notes.
Most people who know me well realize that I’m going through something right now. A little soul-searching. I bought a plane ticket to Mexico in April just to get away from everyone.
My goal was to come here and basically train with black belts in jiu-jitsu and drink a lot of tequila. And write a lot, I guess?
My best writing comes when I’m going through something difficult.
Here’s the thing. I’ve been a workaholic all my life. I studied harder than my peers, I worked out harder than the kids I played sports with in high school, and I’ve written my ass off over the last five years online.
But I haven’t felt fulfilled lately. I dread work. I dread about 75% of my work day. This dread has led to a lot of dabbling in certain hobbies, like photography, and jiu-jitsu, and rock climbing.
I take three hours out of the middle of my day — 3 days per week — to get my ass kicked in Jiu-Jitsu by black belts. And I’ve never felt better.
2018-Tom would’ve shit his pants if he lost 30 minutes of precious work time in the middle of his day.
I’m doing something now that I’ve forgotten how to do, and it’s making my life exponentially better.
